Comparing and Contrasting - Sydney Norris

Compare and Contrast
In the essay “Columbus and the Moon” I believe they are comparing the Columbus voyage and NASA trip to the moon. As proof of them comparing is in the very first paragraph when Wolfe says “Spain was engaged in a sea race with Portugal in much the same way that the United States would be caught up in a space race with the Soviet Union four and a half centuries later.” Another reason I believe these two events are being compared is because Wolfe goes even further and says how they did similar things. Wolfe did this when he said, “But NASA and Columbus made not one but a series of voyages.” Last thing Wolfe does by making me think he is comparing the two series of events is he uses words like likewise.” Wolfe will use the word “likewise” when telling something that happened in the voyage to Columbus to compare it to something similar that happened in the trip to the moon. These are just a few ways and examples Wolfe does use to make me think he is comparing these two major series of events.
In the article “Life in a Bundle of Letters” I believe this article is contrasting talking through the mail and talking through the telephone. The reason I believe this is because in the article it says word for word “Sometimes I think that the telephone call is earthbound as daily dialogue, while a letter is an exchange of gifts.” This is clearly the author stating how writing a letter is not the same as talking to someone on the phone. Goodman gives a further example of how these two things are different by saying On the telephone you talk; in a letter you tell.” So, these examples make me believe that Goodman is telling the difference, contrasting, between talking through a letter/mail and talking through the phone.

Different types of teachers? -Sydney Norris

Did you have different teachers?
Throughout high school I had many different teachers. The ones that taught stuck out to me was the coach that was a teacher also, my math teacher, and my history teacher. The teacher we all loved the most was the “teacher” that was a coach. Just about anyone who has had a coach as a teacher knows how that goes. Even though he didn’t teach us much out the book, he helped us understand the concept of the book related to real life situations. He was brutally honest he would tell us how it is even if it hurt our feelings. Our coach believed we deserved to be treated like how adults are, considering we were about to become adults. Most of all he believed in tuff love and that only way you become stronger is to look to God through the storm. Next, is my math teacher. She was so kind to everyone, and you could talk to her about anything. She was so determined to see us pass that she would do anything to help us and never harm our grades. My graduating class saw her as the momma as a group. What we mean by that is the fact of she spoiled us like we were her own. She was the woman we talked to in the days we weren't in the greatest mood. That woman was our rock. Finally, was our history teacher. Now our history teacher was the toughest of the toughest. She wanted us to succeed but she believed it should be earned not given. While at the time we were all upset, we are so thankful to this day for how much she did for us. If our history teacher wasn’t so hard graduating and entering life would be ten times harder.

Different types of friends - Sydney Norris

Different types of friends
In about every friend group you have so many different types of personalities. Just about every friend group though has at least one goofy friend, the one that everyone loves, and one that just goes with the flow of things. My friend Gabe is my absolute best friend and he is the goofiest one of all. What makes my friend group love Gabe is that Gabe will do just about anything you tell him he cannot; that is why he is so goofy. For example, two of our friends could be arguing and to lighten the mood he will jump in and instigate it in a way that you can only laugh. Furthermore, he does what he wants when he wants to, which sometimes can be dangerous. One time we all went to the beach and he decided to jump out the car and run in the road to grab a traffic cone to take it back to our condo; the thing is no one could do nothing but laugh because that is just Gabe’s personality. Then we have Madalyn that no matter what she does it seems like no one could ever truly be mad at her. Madalyn and I have been friends since day one and I would not trade her for the world. Her personality is calm, humble, and kind. No matter how much someone does her wrong she always finds the kindness in her heart; she has no clue how much people strive to be like her. People strive to be the kind person she is so much that they see her as a threat and not a friend. They have no clue how much they are missing out on! For example, Madalyn has had people literally ditch her but no matter what she will give someone a second chance. But, do not take her kindness for weakness she still knows her worth and knows when enough is enough. Now my friend Jessica she for the main part just does whatever anyone is up to in the moment. Even if she cannot do it, she will at least try. She does this because she loves to please other people before herself. That is why she makes such a great friend for how selfless she is!
